ZIMMER-WURTH Mathias
Mathias ZIMMER was born in Trier on 19 March 1805; he married Catherine WURTH in Luxembourg in 1835. Catherine WURTH was the daughter of Martin WURTH-FENDIUS, chapelier and later entrepreneur de messageries. She was also the sister of François WURTH-PAQUET.
The witnesses at the wedding were Philippe Christophe WURTH, négociant and Louis Pierre FENDIUS, avocat, both from the bride’s family and the witnesses on ZIMMER’s side were his brothers-in-law Jean Fredric Joseph BOCHHOLZ, avocat avoué and Jean Baptiste MERTES, négociant chapelier.
ZIMMER was the son of an aubergiste in Trier and himself an aubergiste at the time of his marriage. He settled first in the Grand’rue in Luxembourg city centre and later (1836) in Clausen (“Scheitler’s Gârt”) where he became a brasseur and a marchand de vins.
ZIMMER moved from Luxembourg to Trier around 1840 and between 1843 and 1846 moved to Remich where his family is listed in the Census of 1846. ZIMMER’s occupation was then marchand.
In 1859 he emigrated with his family to the United States, first to Pennsylvania (Census of 1860) then to Illinois (Census of 1870) and later to Alabama (Census of 1880).
Mathias ZIMMER must have died between 1870 and 1880 since he is not mentioned in his family’s listing of the 1880 census of Alabama and his wife Catherine WURTH is recorded as widow.
