TUDOR Hubert
Hubert TUDOR was born in Rosport in 1850. He was the first child of John Thomas TUDOR and Marie LOSER who were residing on the LOSER farm in Rosport. Hubert was also the eldest brother of Henri TUDOR, known for inventing an improved electrode for lead-acid accumulators.
In 1858 John Thomas TUDOR decided to set up his own farm and rented the Diesburgerhof in Ferschweiler, Prussia, some 20 km northwest of Rosport.
The TUDOR-LOSER family left Ferschweiler at the beginning of 1863. John Thomas TUDOR was released from his contract and he took over a farm in Macquenoise, near Chimay (Belgium). The three TUDOR boys (Hubert, Robert and Henri) went to school in Chimay.
In 1873, when the rental contract in Chimay came to an end, the whole family returned to Rosport. John Thomas TUDOR became the head of the family and of the estate. The three boys Hubert, Robert and Henri were also registered as living in Rosport, although Henri probably continued his studies in Chimay where he must have resided in a boarding house during school time.
From 1879 to 1882 Hubert resided in Brussels, his occupation being négociant. In 1883 he returned to Rosport, at the same time in which his brother Henri had obtained his engineering degree.
Hubert TUDOR became a farmer and mayor of Rosport. In 1884 he was elected to Parliament.
In 1886 when Henri TUDOR signed a contract with the Echternach authorities for installing electric street lighting, Hubert joined him in the venture and so did their cousin Nikolaus SCHALKENBACH. They created the company “Tudor Frères & Schalkenbach” and established their workshops in Rosport.
Hubert TUDOR was a public figure, not just engaged in politics but also in the agricultural and viniculture milieus of Luxembourg.
Hubert’s first British patent application shows that he resided in Brussels in 1896.
He died in 1923 in Rosport (he was not married).
