NEYS Jacques

(1789 - 1865)
Hostert

Jacques (Jacob) NEYS was born in Hostert (Niederanven) on 17 December 1789. His father, Johann NEYS, was born in Uebersyren and was married to Anna Margaretha LACAVE, born in Hostert. The couple settled in Hostert where Johann was a Schreiner and later became a Müller.
In 1813-1814, at the age of 24, Jacques NEYS enrolled with Napoleon’s army and became a Napoleonsdiener.
In 1817, back in Luxembourg, Jacques NEYS married Elisabeth ARENDS in Hostert; the couple had 13 children.
NEYS’ occupation can be retraced through the Marriage and Birth Registers as follows:

1817 Papiermacher
1818-1834 Schreiner
1836-1839 Müller
1842 Schreiner

In 1817 NEYS was thus a Papiermacher, probably in one of the nearby Senningen paper mills. A year later, however, in 1818, when his first child was born, NEYS was recorded as menuisier (Schreiner) in Hostert until 1836 when he became a Müller, and in 1842, when his last child was born, his occupation was again recorded as Schreiner by the Registrar.
Jacques NEYS died in 1865 in Hostert.
