MOES Nicolas
Nicolas MOËS (MOES) was born in Roodt-sur-Ell (Rédange) in 1844. His father François was a Grenzaufseher, Zollbeamter.
Around 1864 Nicolas moved with his mother Catherine DARO to Rédange, while father François, probably for professional reasons, stayed behind in Roodt-sur-Ell. In the Rédange Census of 1864 Nicolas was registered as ferblantier.
In the Census of 1867, however, the MOES-DARO family was reunited in Rédange and father François, now retired as douanier, had become a ferblantier, like his son Nicolas.
Nicolas MOES was thus the founder of the MOES atelier in Rédange.
On 6 November 1868, at the age of 24, he applied as ferblantier-lampiste for his first patent. His most successful invention, however, was his écrémeuse (Milchsatte), invented in the mid-1880s.
In 1871 Nicolas married Marie HEMMER, daughter of an Ackerer in Rédange.
His oldest son François (b. 1872) was part of the family business and so was son Joseph (b. 1879) who took over the business in the early 1900s.
Nicolas MOES died in Rédange in 1918, at the age of 74.
