MICHAËLIS Victor

(1846 - 1884)
Luxembourg-city

Victor MICHAËLIS was born in 1846 in 334 Fischmarkt in Luxembourg-city where his father was a Kaufmann, Essigfabrikant, son of a cabaretier. His mother, Marie Jeanne FISCHER, was the daughter of a marchand de tabac.

Victor’s elder brother Frédéric was “ingénieur des mines” and the manager of the enterprise run by the two brothers.

Although most 1878 and 1880 patents are held in the name of Frédéric, Victor was the inventor, as clearly stated in a brochure published by the brothers in 1880 (see Addendum) and declared in the corresponding GB and US patents. All patents filed as of 1881 stand in the name of Victor.

Professor Paul ROSENSTIEL published a first article on MICHAËLIS’ major invention in 1950 and a further article in 1979 under the title of:

Centenaire d’une invention luxembourgeoise, le système des cuves tournantes de Michaëlis ou méthode luxembourgeoise pour la production du vinaigre.

Victor MICHAËLIS died in 1884, at the age of 38, which may not have been beneficial to the further development and commercial success of the family enterprise. The MICHAËLIS company declined at the beginning of the 1890s and could not profit from the full duration of their 15-year patent monopoly.

Frédéric MICHAËLIS died in 1897 at the age of 56
