MERGEN Jean

Jean MERGEN was born in Paris in November 1893 as Jean SCHMITZ, illegitimate child of Josephine SCHMITZ (1870-1898). She was born in Larochette and was working and residing in Paris as ménagère.
In 1895 she married Henri MERGEN (1869-1901) in Larochette. MERGEN was born in Wiltz and was Metzgermeister in Larochette. He legitimised Jean as his son who took on the name of Jean MERGEN.
The family settled in Larochette.
In 1898 Jean MERGEN’s mother died and his father Henri MERGEN remarried later in the same year Margaretha BECKER with whom he had a son in 1901. Henri MERGEN died at the end of the same year and Jean MERGEN thus grew up with his stepmother and his half-brother.
In 1915, at the age of 22, Jean MERGEN married Margaretha (Maria) FABER in Heffingen (Mersch). His occupation at the time was Chemiker. In 1919, when his first child was born, he gave his occupation as Ingenieur.
In 1929 MERGEN became Directeur of the “Compagnie générale des Goudrons”, founded in 1923.
He remained in this position at least until 1940.
In 1945 MERGEN took over the “Maison Mich. Manderscheid” (87 route d’Esch).
As of 1949 MERGEN conducted his commercial activities under the name of “Etablisssements Jean Mergen” (29 rue du Fort Neyperg).
In 1955 the company changed its name to “Lubri-Pneus-Auto” and re-directed its activities to the sale of cars and tires (Wartburg, Chrysler, Kléber-Comombes, etc.)
MERGEN died in 1964 and his company’s name changed to “FABER & JACQUEMART s.e.n.c.
