DE DOMMARTIN Alphonse
DE DOMMARTIN’s complete name was Amour Alphonse du PASQUIER de DOMMARTIN de FONTENOY. He was born in Echternach on 30 March 1792 and was the son of Michel Ignace DU PASQUIER DE DOMMARTIN, a French officier stationed at the time in Echternach. The latter died in October 1792 as “victime de la révolution française“, only 7 months after the birth of Alphonse.
Alphonse received military training and in 1816 he married Hyacinthe de BLOCHAUSEN living in the Berg Castle. Hyacinthe was the daughter of Joseph de BLOCHAUSEN, owner of the Berg castle and of the Birtrange castle next door. He also owned the Berg foundry.
In 1818 Hiacynthe inherited the Berg family domaine, including the Berg foundry and her brother Frédéric de BLOCHAUSEN inherited the Birtrange domain.
The couple had three children, probably all three born in Metz.
As of 1820 DE DOMMARTIN managed the Berg foundry, up to 1845, when it was sold to Roi Guillaume II.
As can be seen from the Census of 1843, DE DOMMARTIN was at that time a widower and lived with 6 staff members (cocher, valet de chambre, cuisinière, femme de charge, fille de cuisine, bouvier) in the Berg castle. The BLOCHAUSENs lived almost next door in the castle of Birtrange.
DE DOMMARTIN sold the castle and the foundry (including presumably his “puddling” patent) to Roi Guillaume II in 1845.
DE DOMMARTIN, at the age of 53, left Luxembourg for France where he died in Dommartin-sur-Vraine, Vosges on 1 May 1872.
