BUCHHOLTZ Sébastien
François Antoine BUCHHOLTZ (1813 – 1866) was an employé de Douanes in Esch-sur-Alzette in 1843 and set up an Eisenhandel there in 1853.
He died in 1866 and his son Daniel BUCHHOLTZ, born 1841 in Mompach (near Rosport), took over the business. In 1867 he married Thérèse ARENSDORFF, born in Esch-sur-Alzette.
His son Sébastien (born 1869 in Esch-sur-Alzette), who had been educated at the Athénée, joined his father’s business.
In addition to the Eisenhandel, Daniel BUCHHOLTZ set up a brewery in Esch which he advertised for the first time in 1896.
In 1899 he transferred the Eisenhandel to his son Sébastien and his son-in-law Edouard ETTINGER and concentrated on developing his brewery activities.
Edouard ETTINGER (b. 1872) was the son of a notary in Grevenmacher and had married in 1899 Marguerite BUCHHOLTZ, Sébastien’s sister (see family tree in Addendum).
BUCHHOLTZ and ETTINGER developed the business and in 1904 invented an acetylene lamp which they called REFORM and later (1918) RECORD (see trademarks in Addendum).
Daniel BUCHHOLTZ died in 1910 and his eldest son Albert and his son-in-law Othon ETTINGER took over the brewery business.
Sébastien BUCHHOLTZ died in July 1921 and Edouard ETTINGER died soon after, in December 1921. The company survived and was restructured in 1927 through the creation of a société anonyme under the name of “Maison Buchholtz et Ettinger”, the shares being held by family members.
(Helène BUCHHOLTZ (b. 1877), well-known music composer, was Sébastien’s sister).
