BLOC Arthur
Emile Arthur BLOC was the son of Israël BLOC and Jeannette MAYER. Israël BLOC was born 1815 in Maizières (Lorraine) and around 1833 he came to Luxembourg where he learned the trade of glove-making with the firm De Marie & Barreau.
He married Jeannette MAYER in 1845 in Saint Avold, and the couple settled in Luxembourg where they had 3 children.
Arthur BLOC was born in 1846 in Luxembourg-city (339 rue de la Boucherie).
Jeannette’s brother, Gabriel MAYER (1818 – 1905), also left Saint Avold for Luxembourg and created a glove-manufacturing company in Luxembourg-city, sometime before 1850. Gabriel MAYER became a successful entrepreneur. Israël BLOC joined him to manage his glove factory.
In 1855 the BLOCs and the MAYERs lived in the same house in Luxembourg-city (10 rue St Philippe). By 1861 the BLOCs had moved to 166, avenue de l’Arsenal.
Around 1870 Arthur and his younger brother Alphonse joined the MAYER glove factory as contremaître and commis. On 1 July 1889 they took over the factory as “BLOC frères”.
Arthur BLOC was married to Ernestine Emilie OTTERBOURG (born 1858 in Paris). The couple lived in Luxembourg-city (11 Boulevard Royal).
Arthur BLOC died in Luxembourg-city (Fondation J.P. Pescatore) in 1923.
