KUBORN Aloyse

(1866 - 1958)
Bascharage

(Pierre) Aloyse KUBORN was born in Bascharage in 1866. His father Nicolas was Apotheker in Bascharage and later in Differdange.
Aloyse studied at the Athénée in Luxembourg-city and qualified as pharmacien in 1889.
After graduation he joined his father in the pharmacie in Bascharage and in 1985 he married Julie LASSNER. She was the daughter of the couple LASSNER-SIMONIS, the owners of the household store LASSNER on the place Guillaume in Luxembourg-city.
In 1896 Aloyse KUBORN took over the pharmacie in 4 rue de la Boucherie from Jean-Pierre Frédéric FISCHER. The pharmacie became known as “Pharmacie du Cygne”. In 1903 KUBORN decorated the facade of the building with ceramics illustrating swans and plants.
Aloyse’s youngest brother Jean-Pierre (b. 1869) also became pharmacien and took over Aloyse’s position in the family-owned pharmacy in Differdange. Jean-Pierre later became director of the “Comptoir pharmaceutique”.
Aloyse’s brother Théophile (1868 – 1931) studied medicine and and settled in Paris.
Aloyse KUBORN founded the “Luxemburger Tierschutzverein” in 1908. His motivation for doing so was the following:

Täglich mußte er mitansehn, wie grausam die Pferde der Bierbrauer geschlagen wurden, wenn sie ihre Last nur schwer und langsam den Clausener Berg heraufschleppten.

He sold his pharmacie in 1932 to Lucien PITZ and retired to his home in Howald where he died in 1958 at the age of 92.
