HARTMANN François Charles

(1812 - 1879)
Simmern (DE)

HARTMANN was of German origin, born in Simmern, near Coblenz. He was an officer in the Prussian army stationed in Echternach. He probably came to Luxembourg in 1841.

In the wake of the military revolt of 1848 all non-Luxembourg nationals of the Luxembourg army contingent were invited (forced?) to take on Luxembourgish nationality, which was reported in the Mémorial and duly published in the press. HARTMANN was one of the 18 officers that accepted to take on Luxembourgish nationality.

In 1853 he married Marie Madeleine Josephine HANFF, daughter of a notary in Echternach. HANFF was 22 years younger than HARTMANN. HARTMANN’s occupation was Hauptmann-Adjutant.

The couple had no children.

In 1861 when HARTMANN filed his patent application he carried the title of Capitaine et adjutant du commandant supérieur des chasseurs luxembourgeois in Echternach.

In July 1868 HARTMANN resigned from the Military and was granted a pension:

… démission honorable du service militaire est accordée, à partir du 1er juillet 1868:
… au major commandant de bataillon F.-Ch. Hartmann, avec une pension annuelle de deux mille trois cent cinquante francs.

HARTMANN and two of his colleagues who also had retired from the Military were not happy with the amount of the pension they received and appealed in January 1869 to the Chambre des députés for a revision of the allocated amount:

MM. Hartmann, Van Gogh, Buff tous anciens officiers du corps des chasseurs, réclament contre le chiffre de leurs pensions.

François Charles HARTMANN died in Luxembourg-Clausen in 1879.
