MAYER Gabriel
MAYER was born in Saint Avold in 1818. His given first name was “Mayer” but he adopted the name “Gabriel”. MAYER’s spouse, Stéphanie LEVY, was born in 1830 in Namur, daughter of a négociant. Her eldest brother Jules, witness at the wedding, was a banquier.
In 1850 the couple set up home in Luxembourg-city (10 rue St Philippe.) They shared a house with his brother-in-law Israël BLOC who had settled in Luxembourg around 1833.
BLOC was born 1815 in Maizières, and learned the trade of glove-making with the firm De Marie & Barreau in Luxembourg-city. He married Gabriel MAYER’s sister Jeannette in 1845 in Saint Avold and brought her to Luxembourg.
Once MAYER had set up his glove factory, BLOC joined him as technical supervisor.
In 1870 MAYER rented the Caserne d’artillerie of the rue d’Arsenal for establishing his manufacturing site. He built a villa next door as family home (currently Villa Vauban).
MAYER obtained Luxembourg citizenship in 1877.
On 1 July 1889 he retired from his business and transferred it to Israël BLOC’s sons Arthur and Alphonse BLOC (“BLOC frères”).
MAYER died in Luxembourg-city on 14 September 1905.
