BLOC Alphonse
Charles Alphonse BLOC was the son of Israël BLOC and Jeannette MAYER.
Israël BLOC was born 1815 in Maizières (Lorraine) and around 1833 he came to Luxembourg where he learned the trade of glove-making with the firm De Marie & Barreau.
He married Jeannette MAYER in 1845 in Saint Avold, and the couple settled in Luxembourg where they had 3 children.
Alphonse BLOC was born in 1851 in Luxembourg-city (339 rue de la Boucherie).
Jeannette’s brother, Gabriel MAYER (1818 – 1905), also left Saint Avold for Luxembourg and created a glove-manufacturing company in Luxembourg-city, sometime before 1850. Gabriel MAYER became a successful entrepreneur. Israël BLOC joined him to manage his glove factory.
In1855 the BLOCs and the MAYERs lived in the same house in Luxembourg-city (10 rue St Philippe). By 1861 the BLOCs had moved to 166, avenue de l’Arsenal.
Around 1870 Alphonse and his older brother Arthur joined the MAYER glove factory as commis and contremaître. On 1 July 1889 they took over the factory as “BLOC frères”.
Alphonse BLOC was married to Ida EINHORN (born 1862 in Hamburg). The couple lived in Luxembourg-city (11 Neuthor-Avenue).
It is not known when and where Alphonse BLOC died. In 1923 he was still alive and resided in Brussels.
