SCHMIT Jean
Jean SCHMIT was of French origin. He was probably born in the 1840s.
In 1870, when he obtained his first patent, he lived in Paris (35 rue Rennequin). He started off as ferreur (shoemaker) and became fabricant de voitures.
In October 1879 SCHMIT announced in the Luxembourg press that he had set up a fabrique de voitures close to the “Châlet-Dallée”, a popular café-restaurant situated near the Gare Centrale in Luxembourg-city.
In June 1880 he took part in the “Gewerbe Ausstellung” in Ettelbruck and was awarded a bronze medal for his Kutsche.
It would appear that he moved his atelier from the “Châlet-Dallée” in mid 1882s to another location.
It has not been possible to retrace SCHMIT’s professional career between 1882 and 1898.
In 1898, after about 20 years of presence in Luxembourg, SCHMIT put his premises up for sale and probably left Luxembourg.
