(1864 - 1921)
Hamm/Sandweiler

Isidor Paul HIRSCHBERGER was born in Hamm/Sandweiler in 1864 as Isidor, but later he adopted Paul as his only first name.
His father Philippe HIRSCHBERGER was of German origin (born 1824 in Bavaria) and had settled in Luxembourg around 1850. His occupation was Weber. Paul’s mother was Jeannette GODCHAUX, a descendant of the founders of the GODCHAUX textile factory established in Schleifmühl.
Paul became a Handelsmann in textile goods.
Around 1886 he married Johanna HIRSCHBERGER, born in Bavaria.
His business address was first16 Neuthoravenue, later (1890) Gross-Gasse. Beside draperies he offered habillements sur mesure in his shop situated on “coin de la Grand’rue et de la rue du Marché-aux-Herbes”.
In 1896 HIRSCHBERGER published his first comedy. There were more to follow in the next few years and he became a popular author.
He started a second career as Industriel in 1899 by setting up a Kupfergiesserei und Kupferschmiederei in Hollerich (Merlerstrasse).
It would appear that HIRSCHBERGER left Luxembourg in 1906 to take up residence in Paris where his son Jacques studied economy.
By 1909 he had retired and moved to Brussels where he became involved in horse-racing (1910).
In 1917 Paul HIRSCHBERGER was reported having left Brussels for Switzerland but he actually died in Brussels in 1921.
