KAUFFMANN Jean Michel
Jean Michel KAUFFMANN was born in 1833 as Johannes KAUFFMAN in Godbrange (Junglinster). His father was an Ackerer (farmer).
He was married to Marie Catherine MAY (b. 1827 in Ettelbruck), and had three sons.
From Jean Michel’s civil records the following occupations and places of residence can be inferred:
1861 Eisenbahnangestellter (Ettelbruck)
1864 Piqueur der Eisenbahn (Esch-sur-Alzette)
1866 Beamter der Eisenbahn (Bettemburg)
1880 Geometer (Bettemburg)
1916 resided in Hüncheringen
KAUFFMANN settled thus in Bettemburg and later in nearby Hüncheringen. In the Census of 1880 his occupation was géomètre (Meister) without reference to the Eisenbahn as employer. He probably was an independent géomètre at the time.
In 1886 he published a 7-page booklet under the title of “Der neue Theodolite”, which he authored as “Ingenieur-Geometer”.
In 1906, at the age of 73, he obtained patents in France, United Kingdom and the USA for a “Distance and angle measurer”. Four years later he obtained a second patent in France for a similar device.
KAUFFMANN died in Bettembourg (im Kloster) in 1918.
